Lauren Musgrove is an 8-time Southeast Emmy winning filmmaker and an Assistant Professor of Film & Television Production at the University of Georgia. Her work explores deep places of vulnerability and inspiration in the human condition, often engaging with scientific research and fantastical imagery. She is passionate about participating in the art form of film and television production from a variety of angles, promoting sustainable, ethical approaches, and content that encourages inner and outer peace.
Lauren is a very prolific creator. Her partially animated feature directorial debut about teenage anxiety and imagination Ugly Sweater, had its World Premiere at the Boston International Film Festival in April 2024, and is continuing to win awards on the festival circuit. Lauren was a co-producer/co-director for the “People of Alabama” documentary video series with Tamika Moore that garnered millions of views online and received an INMA Global Media Award in 2020. She directed two narrative short films for the upcoming educational “Super Science Showcase” series. Jared Leto’s nationwide A Day in the Life of America documentary, which premiered at Tribeca in 2019 and is now on PBS, hired her to capture a prominently featured emotional Alabama story. After a successful festival run, The Third Saturday in October, a throwback Southern 70s slasher feature film that Lauren produced and Jay Burleson directed, is currently available to stream on Shudder. Lauren’s narrative short film, “Blossoming”, that she wrote and directed, traveled to Sydfest in Australia in 2022. Her most recent project is her directorial debut feature narrative film, Ugly Sweater, that was shot in Boston, MA in February of 2023.
Lauren holds an MFA in Film & Media Art from Emerson College that she received through a full tuition fellowship. While there, she was accepted into a selective summer exchange program at The Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany where she studied, created, and explored animation. Lauren also holds a BA in Media Production from The University of Alabama.
Lauren co-founded a woman-owned production company, Purple Magnet Productions, with Maggie Brown in 2020. PMP is continuously committed to supporting a more inclusive and geographically expansive industry by collaborating with a variety of emerging storytellers and talented artists all over the world. PMP has created over a dozen projects so far, including music videos, commercials, and feature films so far.
